Essential Knowledge
Key Facts Every Depositor Should Know
Coverage is Automatic
You do not need to apply or register for deposit insurance. Simply having an account at a KDIC member institution means your deposits are protected up to KES 500,000.
It Costs You Nothing
Deposit insurance is free for depositors. Member institutions pay premiums to the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) on your behalf. You benefit at zero cost.
Per Institution, Per Depositor
The KES 500,000 limit applies per depositor per institution. If you hold accounts at multiple KDIC member institutions, each institution's deposits are insured separately.
Only at Member Institutions
Deposit insurance only covers deposits held at licensed KDIC member institutions. Before depositing, check that your institution is a registered member.
Be Prepared
If Your Bank Fails
KDIC acts swiftly to protect eligible depositors when a member institution fails. Here is what happens, and what you need to do.
Regulator Acts
The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) places the institution under resolution, receivership, or liquidation and notifies KDIC.
KDIC is Activated
KDIC is immediately appointed to manage the resolution and to protect eligible depositors under the Kenya Deposit Insurance Act, 2012.
Public Announcement
KDIC makes a public announcement through national media, outlining instructions for affected depositors and the claims process.
Submit Your Claim
Eligible depositors submit their claims to KDIC with valid identification and account details, via the claims portal or at designated offices.
Claims Verification
KDIC verifies claims against the failed institution's deposit records to confirm eligibility and the insured amount.
You Are Paid
Eligible depositors receive compensation of up to KES 500,000, paid as promptly as possible once verification is complete.
Your deposits are protected
Up to KES 500,000, automatically, at no cost to you.
