Module 2 · Topic 2The KES 500,000 Coverage Limit
How Much Is Covered?
KDIC insures deposits up to KES 500,000 per depositor per member institution. This limit was set under the KDI Act and applies regardless of how many accounts you have at the same institution.
The key rule: KES 500,000 per depositor per institution — not per account.
Examples
- If you have KES 300,000 in a savings account and KES 100,000 in a current account at the same bank = KES 400,000 total, fully covered
- If you have KES 700,000 in a single account = KES 500,000 covered, KES 200,000 not covered
- If you have KES 500,000 at Bank A and KES 500,000 at Bank B = both are fully covered (separately)
Spreading your deposits across multiple KDIC member institutions is one way to maximise your insured coverage — each institution's balance is insured independently.
